What are leopard geckos?

Let me provide you with thorough leopard gecko information for better understanding of this animal. Leopard gecko or eublepharis macularius are lizards. Yes, lizards and they originate from Afghanistan, India and Pakistan. Their natural environment is dry and rocky like the dessert. They thrive on the ground and under.

What are their physical features?

A leopard gecko’s head is triangular in shape combined with a huge tail use in storing fats. Its skin is naturally patterned as camouflage from enemies. It is also durable to protect skin from the roughness of the sand and rock surface. The back or upper side of the body looks rough while the ventral side looks smooth, transparent and the skins are thin. As they grow the skins sheds which then exudes a more vivid color.

These animals have toes, eyelids and are heavily bodied. They are categorized as a nocturnal species and are equipped with innate vertical elliptical pupils used as a night vision. Leopard geckos are normally small with sizes at nine inches but is known to have reached up to twelve inches nowadays.

They can also survive and live as much as fifteen to twenty-two years old. This lizard weighs about three grams when young and about forty-five to sixty-five grams for adult. The ones that grew up in the wild have dull and darker colors compared to captive geckos and are cared for as family pets have more skin color and pattern assortment.

Geckos have special characteristics that are apparent in its tail. The tail has vertebrae that contain fracture planes located near the base of the tail. This tail breaks free form the body when stressed or harmed to escape from predators – a very unique defense mechanism for leopard geckos.

No need to be anxious of tail separation, it has a quality that automatically seals off the blood vessels in order to avoid infection. In just a matter of weeks the tail will regenerate however, the color and pattern appears differently that the original. Another distinctive function of their tale is that it is able to curl the tail side wards and upwards.

What are its diet considerations?

Gecko lizard’s diet are insectivores meaning, they feed only with insects, spiders, and worm. Captivity geckos love to hunt its own food, with crickets as their most favorite one. They can hunt crickets themselves just like what they do in the wild only they hunt within the premise provided for them.

When food is barely available, they have the capacity to store fats in their tails reserved for use when food is scarce. They also eat shed skin from their own body which is a good source of protein and other nutrition. They shed once a month.

Foods that are readily available for gecko lizard’s diet in the wild are hard to find, furthermore hard to obtain to feed your geckos in captivity. Therefore, a nutritious insect is given to them sprinkled with calcium and D3 which are considered the most important element in their diet.
